Fake Tax Forms, Real Malware

As tax season rolls around in many countries, cybercriminals are seizing the opportunity to exploit it. This weeks scam specifically targets taxpayers through phishing emails. These emails contain attachments that appear to be official tax documents from the IRS.

Opening the attached file will install malware on your computer. This malware utilizes Microsoft Management Console (MSC) files to run scheduled tasks, allowing it to remain active even after you reboot your computer. Once installed, the malware will infiltrate your system, harvest your sensitive information, and steal your data. Unfortunately, while your taxes won’t be paid, the cybercriminals will profit from your loss!

To protect yourself from falling victim to a malware phishing scam, follow these tips:
- Avoid downloading attachments from unexpected emails. Only download attachments and documents from sources you trust.
- Always access and download tax-related forms from official financial or government websites. When in doubt, visit an official tax-related website.

Stay vigilant and protect your information during this tax season!
