Thursday, December 2, 2021 / Categories: Scam Watch Order Confirmation Imitation Holiday shopping has really ramped up, and the confirmation emails are flooding in. You may have received purchase confirmation emails from Amazon, one of the world’s most popular retailers. Unfortunately, cybercriminals have also been sending their own version of these emails. In a new scam, cybercriminals create and send fake Amazon emails, impersonating them. They are really in hope of one thing, sending you fake purchase confirmation emails in order to receive a gift of their very own: your credit card information. In these scam emails, cybercriminals send you a fake purchase confirmation that appears to come from the mass retailer Amazon. In the email, you are able to review details about the phony purchase, such as payment amount and your mailing address. To review this purchase further, you can click a “view or manage order” button in the email. Once you click the button, you will be taken to Amazon’s real website, but you will be unable to find information about the purchase. As a last resort, the email provides you with a phony customer service phone number, if you make the call to that phony line, you will be asked to provide your credit card number and CVV as a way to ‘cancel’ the purchase. Unfortunately, if you take this final step, all you have done was provide the cybercriminals with your credit card information. Some tips to avoid falling for this scam are below: -Watch out for fake customer service phone numbers. Go to websites directly to confirm or find the legitimate number. -Don’t click links in emails that you were not expecting. If you click a malicious link, malware or other malicious software may be downloaded onto your device. -Don’t share sensitive information, such as credit card numbers or social security numbers, over the phone.
